  • There have been cases of travelers being victims of pickpocketing and theft, including bag snatching, at tourist destinations and on public transportation.

  • Please keep the three safety principles in mind: “Don’t stand out,” “Don’t let others predict your actions,” and “Be vigilant” in order to ensure your safety.

Criminal activities targeting travelers have been reported at tourist spots, with a particular increase in pickpocketing and bag snatching incidents. In the past, there have also been cases of robbery, threats, and incidents on public transportation. Be cautious even when invited to meals or to someone’s home. Stay aware of the following safety tips and ensure you’re following preventative measures:

1. Crime Prevention Measures

(1) Pickpocketing and Bag Snatching

  • In crowded areas such as airports, stations, and bazaars, keep your belongings close and be aware of your surroundings.

  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash, watches, or valuable jewelry in public.

  • Avoid wearing flashy clothing that could attract attention.

  • Carry only essential valuables, and spread them out in different locations.

  • Never leave valuable bags or pouches unattended in hotel lobbies, restaurants, or any public place. Don’t leave smartphones or valuables on tables.

  • Keep bags zipped or buttoned, and wear them in front of your body or under your arm. Avoid placing valuables in your back pocket.

  • If approached by strangers, keep your valuables close to your body and remain cautious.

(2) Hotel Safety

  • Store valuables in the hotel safe when you go out.

  • Lock the door with both the key and a chain lock when inside your room.

  • Don’t open the door easily when someone knocks; always verify the person’s identity. If something feels suspicious, contact the front desk.

(3) While Walking

  • When passing or overtaking others, maintain a safe distance (about the length of one arm).

  • Avoid using earphones or looking at your phone while walking, as this can reduce your awareness of the surroundings.

(4) Photography

  • Photography is prohibited at airports, stations, ports, government facilities, and military sites.

  • Even when there are no signs stating that photography is forbidden, always confirm with others before taking photos.

(5) Nighttime

  • Avoid going out at night unless necessary. If you must, travel in a group and use a taxi. Avoid areas with few people.

  • Be cautious if approached by strangers, and never accept food or drinks from unknown people.

2. Public Transportation

  • When using public transportation, avoid traveling late at night or early in the morning. If you must, travel in a group, and remain alert to your surroundings, even if only for a short period.

  • Pay attention not only inside the vehicle but also at the station or bus stop.

  • When taking a taxi, confirm the destination and fare before getting in. Avoid unlicensed taxis. When exiting, check for any belongings left behind in the car.

  • For long-distance buses or trains, keep your valuables close to your body and remain aware of the actions of fellow passengers.

3. If You Become a Victim

  • If you become a victim, file a report at the nearest police station.

  • In case of an emergency or trouble, call 110 (police) immediately.

  • If you need assistance, contact the Japanese Embassy.
