  • Card skimming (debit/credit cards) incidents have occurred in the country.

  • We urge residents and travelers to be fully aware of the potential risks associated with cashless transactions, including card usage, and to take the utmost care in preventing fraud.

  1. Places Where You May Be at Risk of Skimming Abroad: (1) ATM Use
Some ATMs are fitted with a device called a “skimmer” at the card insertion/reading area to steal magnetic information, while a small camera disguised as a security camera is installed nearby to simultaneously capture the magnetic information and PIN code.

    (2) At Stores When Paying at the Register
When you hand your card to the cashier at a store or restaurant, there have been instances where the cashier takes the card behind the register or into a separate room to skim the card’s information.

    (3) At Taxis or Gas Stations
After handing your card to the taxi driver or gas station attendant for payment, they may skim the card using a “skimmer.”

  2. Countermeasures Against Skimming: (1) Avoid using ATMs in secluded areas or suspicious-looking machines, especially those with unusual card insertion points.
    (2) Always cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN to prevent anyone from viewing it.
    (3) When paying at a store, make sure to swipe or insert your card yourself at the payment terminal. Never hand your card to the cashier.
    (4) Never show or lend your card to others.
    (5) Use transaction notification services.
    (6) Choose a PIN that is difficult to guess.
