A warning has been issued following a recent pickpocketing incident involving a Japanese national.
Incident Details: On May 16, around 7 PM, at a restaurant near Costanera Center, a Japanese resident had their bag, placed at their feet during a meal, swapped out. The stolen items included a passport, mobile phone, and cards. Pickpocketing can be a risk in restaurants, where thieves may take advantage of moments when patrons are less attentive.
Pickpocketing Prevention Tips:
- Keep bags and other personal items in sight, such as on your lap or in front of you.
- Avoid storing valuables in your pockets when removing outer garments.
- Do not hang bags on the back of chairs.
- Stay vigilant during activities such as hotel check-ins, ticket purchases, and currency exchanges, as well as while taking photos.
- Be especially cautious when approached by strangers. If someone seems overly friendly, ignore them and move away. If you feel persistently followed, enter a nearby store or other secure location.
- Keep electronic devices like smartphones and tablets with you rather than leaving them unattended on tables. Store them in your bag or pocket when not in use, and keep an eye on them even while using them.
The restaurant where this incident occurred is in an area frequented by Japanese residents. Please remain vigilant to avoid similar situations.
