• Incident Description: On the afternoon of February 18, while the victim was preparing to board a bus to Salta at the long-distance bus terminal in Retiro Station (carrying a 45L size backpack and a small bag), he felt a sensation as if some liquid had touched his arm. Upon checking, he noticed white or light green liquid on his clothes. At the same time, a woman in her 30s, who appeared to be a local, approached him, offered to help wipe off the liquid, and encouraged him to put down his belongings. After following her advice and placing his bags on the ground while he cleaned his clothes, the victim found that the woman had disappeared and the small bag he had left on the ground was missing.
2. Crime Prevention Measures
• General Information: The bus terminal at Retiro Station is a location frequented by travelers using long-distance buses to other regions and neighboring countries. However, there is a large slum area to the north of the station where crime is prevalent, including theft and robbery. Incidents are more common at night and early in the morning, but recent events have also occurred during the day.
• Type of Crime: This incident follows the so-called “ketchup robbery” method. Typically, criminals work in organized groups, using liquids like ketchup, mustard, or paint to attract the victim’s attention under the pretense of offering help, while others steal the victim’s belongings.
• Prevention Advice: If you notice any substance on your clothing, do not accept help from individuals who approach you. Keep your valuables secured and within reach. It is advisable to use a waist pouch or similar item to keep important items like passports and phones separate from other bags, and never let valuable items out of your sight.
