Myanmar: Alert on Combat Situation in Northern Shan State and Mandalay Region
Date: August 7, 2024
1.Situation Update: Since last year, fighting between the Myanmar military and various ethnic armed groups has escalated in Northern Shan State. In early July 2024, the conflict reached the major city of Lashio, and on August 3, the Northeast Regional Military Command headquarters in Lashio was seized by armed groups.
2.Travel Advisory for Northern Shan State: A Level 3 advisory (“Avoid all travel”) has been issued for Northern Shan State, including Lashio. Given the current situation, all travel to this region should be avoided for any purpose.
3.Mandalay Region Update: In Northern Mandalay Region, ethnic and pro-democracy armed groups are intensifying their attacks, with combat extending to areas near Mandalay city. Although fighting has not yet occurred in Mandalay city itself, there is a risk of displaced persons from nearby areas, potential disruptions in communication and transportation, and increased tension due to the presence of the military’s Central Military Command within the Mandalay Palace grounds.
4.Travel Advisory for Mandalay Region: A Level 2 advisory (“Avoid non-essential travel”) is in effect for Mandalay Region, including Mandalay and Pyin Oo Lwin. Given the current conditions, non-essential travel to this region should be avoided. If you are currently in the Mandalay Region, consider temporary evacuation to Yangon or other safer areas.
