On July 30, the Icelandic Meteorological Service updated information on the status of the volcano around Grindavik in southwestern Iceland, noting that volcanic activity in the area has increased again and that the risk of an eruption is increasing within the next 7-10 days.
According to the announcement, the pressure inside the volcano has been increasing, and since last week, ground undulations and an increase in the number of earthquakes have been observed, and yesterday morning, volcanic tremors occurred continuously for more than 50 minutes.
Prior to the above announcement, the Icelandic National Protection and Crisis Management Authority raised the danger information from “caution level” to “warning level” due to the increased possibility of an eruption.
(*The danger information for Iceland has three levels from the top: Emergency, Warning, and Caution.)
The area where the next eruption is predicted has been active since the second half of last year, and has erupted five times since the end of last year. The Blue Lagoon hot springs are located near the area, and the Keplavik International Airport is not far away.
If you are planning to visit or are currently visiting Iceland, please be aware of this situation, keep yourself up-to-date on the latest information, and consider planning your itinerary with plenty of time to spare in case of an emergency.
Please be aware that entry to the area where the eruption is expected to occur is restricted, but please do not go beyond the restricted area and approach the eruption site.
