Key Points:

  • Fraud incidents in Malaysia have been steadily increasing over the past decade. Over 200,000 cases have been reported, with a total loss of approximately 9 billion ringgit. The number of incidents in 2024 reached a record high of 35,368 cases, which is about 5.6 times the number from ten years ago. As of March 16, 2025, the number of cases in 2025 has already exceeded 10,000, with losses amounting to around 400 million ringgit. The main types of fraud include:

    • Phone scams (4,509 cases) involving impersonation of bank employees or police officers.

    • E-commerce fraud (2,118 cases) through online shopping platforms.

    • Investment fraud (1,652 cases).

  • Additionally, digital arrival card fraud has been observed, where fake websites ask for credit card information under the guise of charging a “fee” for the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC). Please be aware that no fee is required upon entry to Malaysia.

  • The Royal Malaysia Police has launched a website (https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my/) where individuals can check for suspicious phone numbers, bank accounts, or even companies involved in fraudulent activities. We encourage you to utilize this site to prevent fraud.

  • Theft is also a concern, particularly in central Kuala Lumpur and tourist areas, as well as near KL Sentral Station and the route to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Many reports have been made regarding thefts of bags or wallets containing passports and other valuables. Please be cautious and avoid storing valuables in easily accessible pockets.
