A vehicle break-in has occurred. Business travelers and tourists are advised to exercise caution.
1. Incident Overview:
On March 5, 2025 (Wednesday), between 6:55 PM and 8:15 PM, a Japanese business traveler parked their vehicle in the underground parking lot of a large shopping center in the Irrigación District of Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico City. The traveler went shopping and, upon returning to their vehicle, discovered that a backpack containing a laptop, passport, and other items, which had been placed under the rear seat, had been stolen. The vehicle was locked when the traveler left, and there was no damage to the windows or other parts of the vehicle.
2. Precautions:
-
(1) Vehicle break-ins can occur at any time and in any location in Mexico. Even for short periods when leaving your vehicle, do not rely solely on locking the car; always ensure that valuable items are not left inside. Carry them with you instead.
-
(2) For items that cannot be carried, it is effective to store them in the trunk. However, if criminals are watching, the trunk can become an ideal target. Therefore, place your items in the trunk before you depart. Also, when you leave the car, avoid actions such as taking things in and out of the trunk in the parking lot, which might reveal that you have valuable items inside. (For hatchback vehicles, make sure the contents are not visible from the outside.)
