Switzerland is often considered safe, but caution is still necessary.
We would like to report an incident that was brought to our attention:
On the early morning of February 21 (Friday), a man was attacked by two robbers while walking from Bern’s central station towards his home, a typical 15-minute walk. Fortunately, the man was not injured, but he had his wallet, mobile phone, and other items stolen. He immediately contacted the police to report the theft. The following day, February 22 (Saturday), the Bern transport authorities contacted him to inform him that “your wallet has been found.” However, although the wallet was returned, most of the money was missing, and only the cards remained.
This is an example of the kind of incident that can happen. While Switzerland is generally considered safe, it is by no means immune to crime. Even when walking around town during shopping, commuting, or returning home, unexpected dangers can arise. Always remain alert and mindful of your surroundings.
Please take note of the following precautions:
-
Avoid walking through areas with little pedestrian traffic whenever possible.
-
If traveling late at night or early in the morning, consider using a vehicle instead of walking, if feasible.
If you are a victim of a crime, please contact the nearest police station and inform the consulate as well.
