● Since February, the Consulate has received around 20 reports of passport thefts, which is an increase compared to the holiday season. For those residing in or planning to visit Barcelona, it is essential to take extra precautions to prevent theft.
● As in previous years, theft incidents also occur at airports, event venues, etc. When visiting for business or other purposes, please remain vigilant in these areas, even if they seem safe, and ensure proper handling and storage of valuables.
1. Reported Theft Cases
(1) Around 7:00 PM, while walking near a popular tourist spot, a person was suddenly grabbed by both arms, strangled, and thrown to the ground behind a car. The victim’s waist pouch was stolen.
(2) Around 11:00 AM, while walking near a tourist attraction, the victim had mustard or another liquid poured on their back. While stopping to clean it off, a man on a kickboard distracted the victim, and during that moment, their bag was stolen.
(3) While dining in a café or restaurant near a tourist spot, the victim placed their shoulder bag on the seat or at their feet, only to later discover it had been stolen.
2. Preventing Pickpocketing and Bag Snatching
(1) Pickpocket Prevention
Carry your bag diagonally across your body and keep it in front of you, including waist pouches, to prevent anyone from slipping their hands inside or opening zippers without your notice.
(2) Preventing Bag Snatching
Never leave your bag unattended, even for a short period, such as when ordering at a café, going to the restroom, or standing in line. Many incidents have been reported where bags were stolen while placed at the feet or on the chair. Always keep your valuables close and be mindful of your surroundings.
Particularly when renting a car and placing valuables in the trunk, or when approached by someone claiming there’s a flat tire, criminals may take advantage of your distraction to steal items left on the seats. Be aware of surveillance cameras and always keep valuables on your person.
3. Preventing Robbery
(1) Avoid Less-Traveled Areas
Avoid walking through isolated streets, both during the day and night. Stay particularly alert when traveling at night or early in the morning.
(2) Walk Close to Walls and Keep Bags to the Side
To prevent snatching, walk along walls, especially on roads where cars pass, and keep your bag on the side away from the street.
(3) Minimize Walking Distances at Night
Even in busy areas, robberies and snatchings can occur at night. If you must travel late, consider pre-booking a taxi to minimize walking distances.
(4) Keep Cash and Valuables Discreet
Avoid making it obvious that you are carrying large amounts of cash. Thieves may target you if they see high-end watches, jewelry, or designer bags. ATM usage in the city should be minimized for safety.
4. What to Do If You Become a Victim
In the case of robbery, especially if the attacker is armed, do not resist. If you spot a police officer nearby, shouting may draw attention, but be cautious, as this could provoke the attacker.
If you are the victim of snatching, do not cling to your belongings. Attempting to hold onto your items could result in serious injury or harm from the thief.
5. Additional Information
The National Police and the Catalonia State Police have created an awareness video to help prevent thefts. This video showcases typical criminal tactics, and we recommend viewing it before traveling.
