Key Points

A theft incident involving Japanese nationals occurred on the afternoon of February 1, prompting this safety advisory.

In the afternoon of February 1 (Saturday), two Japanese tourists were victims of theft while using a rental car in Viña del Mar. Their valuables were stolen along with their bags, which were left inside the vehicle. Similar cases targeting tourists have been reported in Viña del Mar and Valparaíso. To avoid becoming a victim, always carry your valuables with you and never leave them inside the car, even for a short period.

Incident Summary

While sightseeing in Viña del Mar, two Japanese tourists attempted to park in a lot but were directed by an attendant to another parking area slightly farther away. While driving there, they noticed another vehicle following them. The driver of that vehicle rolled down their window and gave directions in Spanish and English. The victims also lowered their window to listen and followed the suggested parking spot.

After parking, the driver of the other vehicle approached and pointed out that the left rear tire was flat. The two tourists exited their car to inspect the tire, leaving the doors unlocked and the windows open. The man then helped them retrieve a spare tire from the trunk and pretended to assist with the replacement. In the middle of the process, he claimed he needed additional help and left the scene.

Shortly after, the victims realized that two backpacks containing cash, credit cards, passports, smartphones, and a camera, which had been placed on the driver’s and passenger’s seats, were missing. The suspect never returned.

Theft Prevention Measures

  • Never leave valuables inside the car, even for a short period. Always carry them with you.
  • Lock all doors and close all windows before leaving the vehicle, even if stepping away for just a moment. Double-check that the car is securely locked.
  • Be aware of suspicious individuals or vehicles nearby when parking. If you feel uneasy, move to another location immediately.
  • Be cautious if approached by strangers, especially those offering assistance. Even if they appear friendly, avoid engaging and do not roll down your window or open your door. If someone persistently follows you, report it to the police.
  • If a stranger claims your tire is flat, do not immediately exit the vehicle. Instead, drive to a well-lit, populated area before checking the issue. If the tire is indeed punctured, remain inside the locked car and contact the rental company or your insurance provider for assistance. If changing the tire yourself, do so in a monitored area like a gas station with security cameras.

Viña del Mar is currently crowded with summer vacation tourists, and similar thefts are frequent. Please remain vigilant to avoid falling victim to such crimes.
