There have been cases of unauthorized requests for money and goods from persons who appear to be police officers. Please be careful when responding to questions about your duties from persons who appear to be police officers.

1 Outline of the incident
On July 20, 2024 (Sat.) at around 20:00, three Japanese male residents finished fishing at the Ensenada fishing port and were driving to the Tijuana area on a mountain side road avoiding traffic congestion in the city when they were questioned by two persons who appeared to be police officers. They demanded money from him. Although he refused at first, he was handcuffed and placed in a police car, so he was forced to follow instructions and pay approximately $700 after the drive recorder in his vehicle was recovered.

2 Notes.
(1) In Mexico, there have been cases in the past of unauthorized demands for money and goods from persons believed to be corrupt police officers. Even if you receive a request from a police officer, be sure to confirm the identity (name, etc.) of the responding police officer or inquire at a police facility, if necessary.
(2) Even when there is traffic congestion, the risk of becoming a victim increases during times (places) when there are fewer people around. (3) When traveling by road avoiding the city center at night, the possibility of being involved in various crimes other than this case increases, so please try to choose routes through the city center whenever possible.
