Sri Lanka: Advisory on the Threat of Attacks in Arugam Bay

1.On the 23rd of this month, the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka issued a security alert, warning that there is a credible threat targeting popular tourist destinations in Arugam Bay, located in the southeastern part of the country. The embassy strongly advises U.S. citizens to avoid traveling to the area until further notice.

2.Based on the above situation, we advise all Japanese residents and travelers to avoid traveling to the region as much as possible. Additionally, please take the following precautions to avoid being involved in any unexpected incidents:

(1) If you witness suspicious behavior or encounter an emergency, contact local authorities (dial 119).

(2) Avoid visiting places that are more likely to be targeted by terrorism, such as foreign-related facilities, religious sites, hotels, public transport, restaurants, shopping malls, busy areas, tourist attractions, and government facilities. Always remain vigilant and stay aware of your surroundings. If you feel something is wrong, leave the area immediately.

(3) Always carry a means of communication (such as a mobile phone).

(4) Stay updated on the latest news and information through local media.
