Danger Levels:

• Level 3: Avoid all travel (Warning against travel) – Continuation
Areas: Central and southern regions of Darién Province and Emberá Wounaan Comarca, as well as the southern areas of Kuna Yala Comarca
• Level 1: Exercise caution – Continuation
Areas: David City in Chiriquí Province, La Chorrera City and Arraiján City in West Panama Province, Panama City and San Miguelito City in Panama Province, and Colón City in Colón Province

Key Points:

1. Darién, Emberá Wounaan, and Kuna Yala Regions
These regions are largely remote jungle areas with minimal oversight by security forces, making them prone to illegal activities such as drug trafficking and human trafficking. Additionally, the influx of illegal immigrants crossing from Colombia through the Darién Gap has contributed to a rise in crimes related to these migrants. Infrastructure is underdeveloped, making emergency responses difficult, and posing significant risks. Travel to these areas is strongly discouraged.
2. David City, La Chorrera, Arraiján, Panama City, San Miguelito, and Colón
These areas have seen rising violent crime rates, particularly linked to gang activity. Panama City and its surrounding areas, including the popular Casco Antiguo district, have been hotspots for crimes involving firearms. Tourists, including Japanese nationals, have been targeted in crimes in these regions. Travelers are advised to avoid walking alone, especially at night, and to exercise caution in these areas.

Recommendations for Travelers:

• Avoid displaying valuables or large amounts of cash in public.
• Use ride-hailing apps for transportation and avoid hailing taxis from the street.
• Be aware of your surroundings at ATMs and avoid using them in isolated areas.
• If confronted by criminals, do not resist, as they may be armed.
