We would like to issue a caution following a snatch theft incident involving Japanese nationals.
On Sunday, October 13, at approximately 11:30 AM, two Japanese residents were surrounded by two young men, believed to be in their mid-teens, and had their backpacks stolen on a street about 200 meters from the Ascensor Cordillera in Valparaíso. The following day, Monday, October 14, at around 7:50 PM, a foreign couple was robbed of their mobile phone by a pair posing as a couple near the Hill of Concepción, about 900 meters from where the first incident occurred. The couple was threatened with a knife when they resisted.
Snatch Theft Prevention Tips:
- Avoid entering narrow or secluded alleys unnecessarily.
- When visiting dangerous areas, try to move in groups whenever possible.
- Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times.
- Do not display valuables in public.
- Avoid carrying valuables with you whenever possible.
- If you do become a victim, do not chase after or resist the thieves, and avoid provoking them.
There have been incidents targeting tourists in Valparaíso. Please exercise caution to avoid falling victim to similar crimes.
