Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Santiago, Chile (September 10, 2024)

 

Location: Regions of Santiago Metropolitan,Valparaiso, and Viña Del Mar

Event:  U.S. Embassy Santiago advises U.S. citizens of continuing robberies and assaults in the regions of Santiago Metropolitan – to include the area immediately around the Santiago International Airport, Valparaiso, and Viña Del Mar.

 

The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens that Chile is classified as Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution in the State Department’s travel advisory found here.  U.S. Embassy Santiago’s Alerts and Messages are available onour website here.  

Actions to Take:​ 

  • Remain alert and vigilant in public areas.  Pickpocketing is common at popular tourist destinations and shopping centers including, but not limited to, Cerro Santa Lucia, Cerro San Cristobal, Mercado Central (La Vega), Plaza de Armas, Bellavista, Yungay, Barrio Lastarria, Persa BioBio, Barrio Meiggs, Patronato, Centro Cultural Estación Mapocho, and Los Dominicos. 
  • Rental cars are easily identified with sticker logos.  Do not leave any valuables in any vehicles.
  • Maintain a low profile in public and avoid going out alone, especially after dark.  Travel in groups even in well-lit areas.
  • Avoid excessive jewelry, electronics, and carrying and flashing large sums of cash.
  • Alert a close family member and/or friend if you plan to travel and leave your contact information with them.
  • Do not physically resist any robbery attempt.
  • Do not accept help from strangers offering to fix your car.
  • Drink spiking occurs.  Do not leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers or accept drinks from strangers. 
  • Review your personal security plans and carry a copy of your identification.
  • If you are a victim of crime, contact Chilean Carabineros at 133.
  • If you are injured and require immediate medical attention, call emergency medical services at 131.
