South Africa: Methods of Robbery Targeting Homes

Reports from security companies indicate that criminals have been shutting off water supply valves installed around homes and then attacking residents who go outside to check the valve. Some criminals have even placed objects like stones around gates enclosing the valve to create an obstruction, and they strike when the residents bend down to remove these obstacles.
If the water or electricity supply to your home suddenly stops, consider not only the usual possibility of a service disruption but also the chance that it might be deliberately caused by criminals. When checking outdoor water valves or electrical panels, do so cautiously, preferably with multiple people and while remaining alert to your surroundings.
In the unfortunate event that you become a victim, please file a report with the local police authorities and also notify the Embassy of Japan in South Africa with details of the incident.
