- Recently, phishing scams have been using SMS messages pretending to be from Bulgaria Post to steal card information.
- Here is an example based on information provided by a Japanese national living locally:
- An SMS was received stating: “We attempted to deliver a package but returned it due to insufficient address information. Click the link to confirm your information.”
- Clicking the link led to a page requesting personal details such as name and address, and stated that online payment for package pickup fees could be made by entering card information.
- The pickup fee for the package was set at a few dozen stotinki, similar to what would be charged by the actual post office, making the fake site appear genuine.
- Attempts to use a one-time virtual card (a single-use card number for online payments) were rejected, and entering regular bank card information led to the page freezing.
- After sending a screenshot of the SMS to the post office’s inquiry desk, it was confirmed to be a scam and not an official message from the post office.
- Phishing sites are very sophisticated and can easily deceive even those who are usually cautious, especially if they are waiting for a package. Please be aware of the following points to avoid falling victim:
- Keep track of your package status and delivery dates if you are expecting a delivery.
- Check the sender’s phone number; if it is not from Bulgaria (+359), suspect a scam.
- If the link’s URL is different from the official website (for Bulgaria Post, it should be https://www.bgpost.bg/), suspect a scam.
- Access official sites directly instead of following links in SMS messages.
- Use a one-time virtual card or similar service for payments with new services, and if it is not accepted, suspect a scam.
