Surabaya, Indonesia: Dengue Fever Situation and Precautions

According to local reports, the Surabaya City Health Office has warned of a 30% increase in dengue fever cases from January to April 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. They are urging vigilance, particularly as the western part of Surabaya may experience a further spread of the infection.

Dengue Fever Symptoms and Precautions:

  1. Symptoms: Dengue fever has an incubation period of 2 to 14 days (usually 3 to 7 days). It typically begins with a sudden high fever, accompanied by headache, eye pain, facial flushing, and conjunctival redness. The fever lasts for 2 to 7 days, followed by symptoms such as muscle pain, joint pain, and general fatigue. A rash may appear 3 to 4 days after the onset of fever, starting on the torso and potentially spreading to the limbs and face. The Indonesian Ministry of Health advises seeking medical attention if symptoms persist for more than 3 days.
  2. Precautions:
    • Use mosquito repellent, especially after rain or during the day when dengue-carrying mosquitoes are more active.
    • Keep windows and doors closed to prevent mosquitoes from entering your living space.
    • Consult a medical professional if you experience symptoms and avoid using medications that might worsen dengue fever.

Emergency Action:

  • If dengue fever is suspected, promptly visit a healthcare facility for evaluation and treatment.
