In early May, near Brussels South Station, a Japanese national was robbed of a luxury watch while walking from the station to their hotel. There were also incidents where clothing was smeared with some kind of filth within the station. Similar crimes have occurred in the past, including cases where individuals were assaulted by multiple men and had their mobile phones stolen, were suddenly surrounded by several men near a metro entrance and had their watches stolen, had ice cream or paint smeared on their clothes to create a distraction and had their bags stolen, or were approached with a request to exchange money and had their wallets taken.

To avoid becoming a victim, please take the following precautions:

  1. Avoid wearing extravagant accessories, and refrain from wearing noticeable clothing or engaging in conspicuous behavior.
  2. Avoid using Brussels South Station at night or early in the morning, and if you must, travel in groups.
  3. Avoid walking when traveling from the station to your hotel or other accommodation.
  4. Always carry your passport in a secure pouch close to your body, and divide your cash, credit cards, and other valuables among multiple places.
  5. Be cautious when approached by strangers, and if you notice any suspicious behavior, seek help from those around you.
