  • Location: National Road (N2), Boane District, Maputo Province

Details:

  • A Japanese national was traveling with an acquaintance when they were stopped by an individual claiming to be a police officer. This person, who had “POLICE” marked on their shoulder but was not in uniform, requested to see the visa.
  • Although the visa and stay duration were correct, the individual falsely claimed that the visa period had expired and prevented them from continuing their journey.
  • The incident turned out to be extortion, as the person demanded money. The driver of the vehicle paid the requested amount and was then allowed to proceed.

Advice for Travelers:

  • Be Cautious: Given the current economic situation, it is possible for both fake and real police officers to engage in extortion. Exercise caution when dealing with individuals claiming to be law enforcement.
  • Verify Identity: Always check for proper identification and uniforms when interacting with someone claiming to be a police officer. Genuine officers will have appropriate credentials and attire.
  • Report the Incident: If you encounter extortion, document the details and report the incident to local authorities and your embassy or consulate.
  • Contact the Embassy: If you are a victim of such incidents, inform the embassy for assistance and follow-up.

Stay vigilant and informed to protect yourself from extortion and other potential issues while in Mozambique.
