On April 20 (Saturday) at around 5:30 PM, two Japanese men were on a city bus (Line 433) in the Centro district of Rio de Janeiro when they were surrounded by a group of approximately 10 to 15 boys, estimated to be between 12 and 15 years old. The men were assaulted with punches and kicks before their belongings, including smartphones and cameras, were stolen.

From Our Consulate:

  • Theft and robbery incidents on buses are frequent in this area. We strongly recommend using relatively safer transportation options, such as taxis.
  • If you encounter a robbery, do not resist. Remain calm and comply with the assailant’s demands.
