Overview: There has been a significant increase in dengue fever cases across Uruguay. The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) has reported a rise in infections and urges both residents and travelers to take preventive measures.

Current Situation:

  • As of March 22, there are 148 confirmed dengue cases in Uruguay. Among these, 57 are local infections, and 91 are imported cases.
  • Salto Department has the highest number of domestic cases, with 32 confirmed. Other affected areas include Montevideo and Paysandú, each with 10 cases.
  • The increase in cases is associated with the upcoming tourist season, which is expected to contribute to the spread of the virus.

Preventive Measures:

  1. Avoid Mosquito Exposure:
    • Stay away from areas with high mosquito activity.
    • Wear long sleeves and pants to minimize skin exposure.
    • Use insect repellent containing DEET or other effective ingredients.
  2. Control Mosquito Breeding Sites:
    • Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed, such as in buckets, tires, and flower pots.
    • Ensure that water containers are covered or treated to prevent mosquito larvae from developing.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue and rash

Additional Information:

  • Dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
  • There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, so prevention is crucial.
