Since early February 2024, there have been multiple reports of pickpocketing incidents at Brussels South/Midi station and Brussels-Luxembourg station, as well as on platforms within the Brussels metropolitan area. In these incidents, groups of perpetrators have been using substances resembling paint to mark the victims’ clothing. They then use this as a distraction to attract attention and steal valuables from the victims’ bags.

Similar crimes have previously involved using substances like ice cream to create a distraction or pretending to offer currency exchange to lure victims into exposing their wallets.

To avoid becoming a victim:

  • Keep your passport in a security pouch and stay vigilant.
  • Carry cash and credit cards in multiple places to reduce the risk of losing everything in one theft.
  • Be cautious when approached by unfamiliar individuals in the city and respond calmly to avoid falling victim to such scams.
