Last week, in the late hours of the night in Kampala, a Japanese man suspected of solicitation was threatened by police officers and had cash extorted from him.
Around midnight in the central area of Kampala, a Japanese man, who had gotten out of a vehicle for shopping, was approached by a young woman from nearby.
At the moment the woman came close to the man, a police vehicle appeared, and the officers threatened the Japanese man, stating that he would be “taken into police custody because the woman was underage” and “because he had touched the woman,” demanding that he either “choose to be taken into custody or pay 300,000 UGX on the spot to be released.”
Although the man had not touched the woman, he assessed the situation as a “money trap” and decided to pay 300,000 UGX to avoid further issues.
It has been determined from the details the man remembered about the police officers that they were not affiliated with the local police precinct.
If you encounter a similar situation, comply with the demands as the Japanese man did, without resistance, and remember the “police vehicle number” and the “name on the police officers’ uniforms,” then report the incident to the embassy.
