3. Incident Overview

The victim, a short-term visitor, arrived at Guarulhos Airport on the night of February 7 and planned to take a train (CPTM) and bus to a hotel in São Paulo. Upon arriving at Luz Station, the victim exited the suburban train and was searching for a bus stop on the street with a smartphone in hand. A woman dressed in black approached from behind, snatched the smartphone, and fled. There were no personal injuries. The victim was pulling a suitcase with their other hand, and no items other than the smartphone were taken.

5. Crime Prevention Measures

  1. The Centro area and the vicinity of Luz Station are known for poor security, with frequent theft and robbery incidents. If you need to visit these areas, avoid traveling alone or on foot as much as possible.
  2. Keep your belongings to a minimum when going out and avoid carrying valuables. If you must carry valuables, distribute them among different locations on your person. Given the high incidence of smartphone theft and robbery, avoid using photo or map apps outdoors whenever possible.
  3. Maintain constant vigilance when outside and periodically scan your surroundings to demonstrate your awareness, which can act as a deterrent.
  4. If you are involved in an incident, comply with the assailant’s demands without resistance as attempting to resist can put your life at risk. Avoid any quick movements that could be misinterpreted as an attempt to flee or resist.
