Caution Regarding Stray Dogs in Morocco

Morocco has a significant number of stray dogs roaming throughout the country. Incidents involving attacks, not just bites, have occurred, including a tragic case in 2022 where a young girl in Agadir was fatally attacked by stray dogs. Stray dogs in Morocco may be carriers of dangerous diseases such as rabies, so it is crucial to avoid approaching or touching them.

Rabies can also be transmitted by other animals, including cats and bats. If bitten by an animal that might carry rabies, immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water, and promptly seek post-exposure rabies vaccination at a designated health facility. Vaccination is effective if administered before the onset of symptoms.

Additionally, for those traveling to rabies-endemic areas or those who may come into contact with animals abroad, it is recommended to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccination as a preventive measure.
