  1. On August 14 (Wednesday) around 8:00 PM, a Japanese male traveler was running alone on Napier Street in the De Waterkant area with headphones and a smartphone when he was attacked by a group of five men. The attackers assaulted him and strangled him. Despite the traveler’s attempts to seek help, the five men continued to assault him. The traveler managed to escape to a nearby hotel, but his smartphone and headphones were stolen, and he suffered bruises on his waist and scratches on his arms and knees.
  2. Please take the following safety precautions: (1) Be aware that Japanese people can stand out in public. Keep valuables like smartphones and wallets out of sight. (2) Even in areas reputed to be relatively safe, crimes can occur. Always stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings (pay attention to the movement of people around you and be cautious of being followed or watched). (3) Exercise extra caution at night, avoid areas with few people or many homeless individuals even during the day, and if possible, travel in groups. (4) The perpetrators may be armed with knives or guns. If you encounter a robbery, do not resist.
  3. Additionally, there have been numerous reports of ATM fraud and theft involving Japanese nationals.
  4. If you are involved in an incident or accident, report it to the local police and contact the Japanese Consulate in Cape Town with the details.
