We would like to inform you that an armed robbery incident resulting in injury occurred, involving a Japanese national who was riding in a vehicle.
1. Date and Time of Incident
Between 11:30 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 26
2. Location
On a street in downtown São Paulo
3. Incident Overview
(1) The Japanese victim was en route from a hotel in São Paulo to Guarulhos International Airport in a car reserved through a ride-hailing app. When boarding, the driver placed the second suitcase on the rear seat behind the driver, so the victim sat behind the front passenger seat. All windows were open, and although the victim asked the driver to close them, the driver did not comply. Only the window beside the victim was closed.
(2) The driver proceeded unusually slowly, even slower than bicycles, staying close to the sidewalk and frequently taking dark roads. Sensing something was off, the victim kept a close watch ahead. Suddenly, the rear window was smashed, and a bag containing a smartphone, credit card, and cash was snatched. As it happened quickly in a dimly lit area, the method of breaking the window and the characteristics of the perpetrator were unclear. The victim instinctively resisted and was injured by the shattered glass, sustaining several cuts.
(3) The driver, showing no concern for the victim’s injuries or situation, stopped in a dark, park-like area and gestured for the victim to get out. Fearing further assault, the victim firmly insisted on being taken to the airport. The driver eventually complied and arrived at the airport.
4. Damages
-
Multiple lacerations caused by shattered glass
-
Stolen items: smartphone, credit card, cash
5. Safety Precautions
(1) Even when riding in a vehicle, remain alert and avoid using your mobile phone or smartphone. If necessary, assess the area and surroundings carefully and keep usage to a minimum. At night, light from the phone may be visible from outside, even through tinted windows, making you an easy target, especially when the vehicle is stopped.
(2) If possible, especially for airport transfers at night, use a reliable travel agency or trusted transportation service.
(3) In the event of an incident, prioritize your safety above all. Do not resist. Comply with the attacker’s demands and avoid any movements that could be mistaken for escape or resistance.
(4) It may be helpful to carry a wallet with cash specifically for such situations, and to hide valuables such as passports and credit cards at your feet or in the trunk.
