A bag-snatching incident involving a Japanese national has occurred, prompting this safety alert.
On Saturday, October 19, around 1:10 PM, at a gas station located at the intersection of Bella Vista Street and Bombero Nuñez Street, a male Japanese resident was checking a map on his smartphone when a perpetrator on a motorcycle approached from behind, snatched the smartphone, and caused the victim to fall, resulting in injuries. In Santiago, incidents of theft using motorcycles (known as “motochorro”) to steal items like smartphones are on the rise. Please be cautious and avoid displaying valuables such as smartphones in public spaces, and always remain alert to your surroundings.
Bag-Snatching Prevention Measures
•There has been a significant increase in thefts targeting smartphones. Avoid using them outdoors whenever possible, and if necessary, use them inside nearby buildings.
•Criminals can appear from anywhere and in any manner. Always be aware of your surroundings and stay vigilant.
•Occasionally glancing around to show your alertness can also serve as a deterrent.
•In the unfortunate event that you are victimized, do not pursue or resist the perpetrator excessively. Avoid provoking them.
