On October 20 (Sunday) around 11:00 PM, a Japanese national boarded a vehicle at Galeão International Airport. While traveling on Elevado Engenheiro Freyssinet Street (near the intersection with Rua Sampaio Viana) in the Lagoa area of the Rio Comprido district, the vehicle suddenly came to a stop when a suspicious vehicle (Jeep) in front of it abruptly halted, blocking its path. As the victim’s vehicle stopped, three individuals armed with handguns exited the suspicious vehicle. The group approached the victim’s vehicle while pointing their guns, prompting the victim’s vehicle to accelerate in reverse, creating distance from the suspects. As multiple ordinary vehicles approached from behind, the suspects returned to their vehicle and fled the scene. Fortunately, there were no shots fired, and no injuries were reported.
From Our Consulate:
•Particularly during nighttime hours when traffic is lighter, the risk of vehicle robbery increases even in the Zona Sul area. Please try to use routes with higher traffic volume.
•Limit your belongings to the bare essentials when going out, and carry valuables in a distributed manner.
•In the unfortunate event of encountering a robbery, do not resist and calmly comply with the assailant’s demands.
