3. Incident Overview

The victim, a short-term visitor, had just finished shopping at Shopping Light and was walking along the street when they felt they were being followed. Despite noticing police officers in the area, they continued walking. Suddenly, one male assailant approached from behind and put the victim in a chokehold, while another male assailant stole their smartphone and camera. The victim sustained minor injuries during the incident.

5. Crime Prevention Measures

  1. The Centro district has seen multiple robbery incidents involving Japanese nationals, both day and night. If you need to visit this area, avoid traveling alone or on foot as much as possible.
  2. Carry only essential items when going out, and avoid bringing valuables. If you must carry valuables, distribute them among different locations on your person. Given the high incidence of smartphone theft and robbery, refrain from using photo or map apps outdoors whenever possible.
  3. Maintain a high level of alertness when outside, periodically scanning your surroundings to demonstrate your awareness. This can act as a deterrent.
  4. In the event of an incident, comply with the assailant’s demands without resistance, as attempting to resist can put your life at risk. Avoid any quick movements that could be misinterpreted as an attempt to flee or resist.
