1. Incident Overview

  • Date: August 20 (Friday)
  • Time: Around 5:40 PM
  • Location: Near La Guñija Market, Cuauhtémoc District, Mexico City
  • Details: A Japanese business traveler was in a taxi from the airport heading to their accommodation when, while traveling near La Guñija Market, a pair of individuals on a motorcycle approached the taxi. They knocked on the window with their fists and forced the driver to open the window. They then stole the traveler’s bag and fled the scene. The victim was unharmed. (It is unclear if the robbers were armed with a firearm.)

2. Precautions

  • Taxi Safety: In Mexico, there have been incidents where taxi drivers or accomplices in taxis have been involved in robbery schemes. Although it is unclear whether the taxi involved in this case was a “free” (libre) taxi, using unregistered taxis increases the risk of robbery. It is recommended to use radio taxis or ride-sharing apps with known affiliations. Always confirm the taxi’s number and driver’s name before boarding, and consider taking note of these details.
  • While in Transit: To minimize risk during signal stops, keep windows closed and doors locked, and avoid leaving visible valuables inside the vehicle.
  • In Case of Robbery: Do not resist or provoke the robbers, as this increases the risk of physical harm. It is safer to comply with their demands. Carrying a small amount of emergency cash separately can facilitate post-incident handling.
  • After the Incident: Once safe, contact emergency services at 911. Reporting the incident immediately can help the police respond quickly and improve the chances of recovering stolen items. Additionally, file a report with the local prosecutor’s office (Denuncia) for insurance claims and to facilitate any necessary passport reissuance due to the crime.
