Shanghai: Increased Reports of Overcharging from Encounters via Matching Apps
Recent reports indicate a rise in incidents of “overcharging” in Shanghai, where individuals have been scammed after meeting women through matching apps and dining with them.
For those staying in or planning to travel to the Shanghai area: Please exercise caution and avoid accepting invitations from unfamiliar individuals lightly. Ensure thorough vigilance, especially for business travelers.
Reports have increased of high charges being levied at restaurants where people were invited by Chinese women met through matching apps or solicited by touts. Please pay careful attention to the following
warnings:
Warning 1: Using matching apps carries risks. Victims often believe, “I won’t be deceived; I thought it would be okay.” Be very cautious.
Warning 2: Allowing someone you don’t know to handle orders for food and drinks may make it difficult to report any issues. If you end up in a suspicious situation, fear might prevent you from leaving. Be cautious about accepting invitations from unfamiliar people.
Warning 3: Any obscene acts with minors, even if consensual, are considered serious crimes. Exercise extreme caution.
