3. Incident Overview
While en route from Guarulhos International Airport to a hotel in the Liberdade district of São Paulo using a ride-hailing service, the vehicle stopped at a red light near the above location. Suddenly, an individual appeared from behind on the right side and struck the front passenger window multiple times with a hard object, breaking the glass in an attempt to steal something from the front seat. The driver’s smartphone was mounted on the dashboard, and he attempted to resist. The Japanese passenger, seated in the back, urged the driver to leave the scene immediately, and the car continued safely to the hotel. At the time of the incident, the street was deserted, and there were no other vehicles stopped at the light.
The suspect is described as a Black male youth, estimated to be between 12 and 15 years old, around 160–170 cm tall, slim build, with a shaved head. Fortunately, the Japanese national was not harmed.
4. Damage Incurred
- Front passenger window of the ride-hailing vehicle was damaged.
5. Safety Precautions
- Even while inside a vehicle, do not let your guard down. Avoid using mobile phones or smartphones, especially at night, as the light can draw attention and increase your risk of being targeted when the vehicle is stationary. If phone use is necessary, check your surroundings carefully and limit usage to essential moments only.
- In the event of a robbery or similar situation, prioritize your personal safety and do not resist. Comply with the assailant’s demands calmly, and avoid any sudden movements that could be perceived as resistance or an attempt to flee.
- As a precaution, consider keeping a separate wallet or small amount of cash readily available to hand over if necessary. Keep important valuables such as your passport and cards hidden in less accessible areas, such as under the seat or in the trunk.
Please remain vigilant and take necessary precautions while traveling in Brazil, especially during nighttime hours.
