1. Incident Overview

On Sunday, April 13, a robbery occurred in the Calidonia district of Panama City, in which two Japanese tourists were attacked and seriously injured, and all their belongings were stolen.

At around 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 12, two Japanese travelers who had entered Panama for sightseeing got off at Cinco de Mayo station and were walking toward Casco Viejo. While walking, a man approached them from behind and spoke to them. Unable to understand what he was saying, they tried to move on, but were then surrounded by two more men approaching from the front. The group demanded they hand over their bags. Since the tourists had entered a narrow alley, they were unable to call for help. Although they shouted and resisted, they were dragged around by the assailants, who ultimately stole all of their possessions, including cash, mobile phones, and passports.

2. Safety Advisory

All tourists and Japanese residents in Panama are strongly advised to avoid walking through designated high-risk areas and instead use taxis or other forms of transportation. In the event of a robbery, do not resist, as doing so may lead to serious injury. Please remain alert when going out, stay aware of your surroundings, and take every precaution to avoid becoming a victim of crime.
