Brazil: Theft (Pickpocketing) Incident Involving a Japanese National

We would like to inform you of a recent theft (pickpocketing) incident involving a Japanese national.

1. Date and Time of Incident:

  • March 31, 2025, around noon

2. Location:

  • T-junction of Reboucas Avenue and Alves Guimaraes Street in São Paulo

3. Incident Overview:

  • The victim was walking and waiting for the traffic light at the location mentioned above. The victim felt a sensation and heard a noise as though someone was touching their eco bag. Upon turning around, the victim saw no suspicious individuals among the many pedestrians waiting at the light. However, when checking the eco bag, the victim discovered that their card case was missing. The card case contained a foreigner’s registration card (RNM), health insurance card, credit cards, and food allowance (Vale-Alimentação). No personal injury was reported.

  • Foreigner’s Registration Card (RNM), Health Insurance Card, Credit Cards, Food Allowance (Vale-Alimentação)

5. Crime Prevention Tips:

  • (1) Theft can occur in an instant and anywhere. Be mindful not to divert your attention away from your valuables and belongings. Keep your personal items to a minimum, and when carrying a backpack or bag, hold it in front of you or wear it diagonally across your body as a self-defense measure.

  • (2) In crowded areas, be vigilant of your surroundings, and ensure to keep your valuables secure by holding onto them.

  • (3) If you become involved in such an incident, prioritize your safety and avoid resisting. Follow the assailant’s demands calmly, and refrain from making sudden movements that could be interpreted as an attempt to flee or resist.
