Recently, there has been a sharp increase in reports of Japanese tourists being scammed in lounges and karaoke bars in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City, where they are approached by Vietnamese men who invite them to these establishments and later charge them exorbitant fees (a classic “rip-off” scam).

Overview:
While sightseeing in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City at night, Japanese tourists have been approached by Vietnamese men who speak fluent Japanese. Through discussions about Japan, the victims were led to believe the men had good intentions. The men then invited them to a lounge, where they were promised inexpensive drinks. However, once there, they were served food and drinks they hadn’t ordered and were charged an unreasonable amount upon leaving.

Preventive Measures:
In cases similar to the one described above, it appears that a Vietnamese man, around 40-50 years old, has been approaching Japanese tourists on Bui Vien Street or at September 23 Park in District 1. He invites them to a lounge located about 10 minutes away by taxi in District 5.

Be cautious of promises that drinks are inexpensive, and do not follow unfamiliar men without careful consideration.

With the increase in both tourist and business travel to the area, it becomes more difficult to resolve these situations once the scam has occurred. However, with proper precautions and awareness, these kinds of scams and disputes can be avoided. Additionally, for those based in the area or with business ties in Vietnam, we strongly recommend providing advance warnings to any Japanese travelers about these potential risks.
