On Saturday, December 14, at around 7:00 PM, a Japanese national was the victim of an attempted robbery at a chapa (minibus) stop in the Malhampsene area of Matola City, Maputo Province.
While waiting for a connecting chapa, the individual was accosted by a group of four young men aiming to extort money. Even after boarding the chapa, the group surrounded the vehicle, attempting to gain access through doors and windows. One of the men boarded the chapa, brandishing a knife, and demanded money. The chapa driver handed over cash on behalf of the passenger, prompting the assailants to leave.
Pickpocketing, theft, and robbery are frequent occurrences in the area. Additionally, incidents where individuals exploit the ongoing protests to illegally demand money under the guise of tolls have been reported. Residents and travelers are urged to remain vigilant at all times, regardless of day or night, during transit.
Please be aware that Japanese and other Asians tend to stand out in Mozambique. Reassess your personal safety measures and take appropriate precautions to ensure your security.
