•On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 29, a Portuguese man was kidnapped in front of the LOKAL supermarket on Av. Armando Tivane in the Polana district of Maputo.
Reports indicate that the victim, a construction company executive, was attacked after parking his car and exiting in front of the LOKAL supermarket. A group of five armed individuals approached him from behind, forcibly placing him into their vehicle. To prevent bystanders from intervening, the kidnappers fired shots at the ground before fleeing the scene. The victim’s whereabouts remain unknown, and police and authorities continue their investigation.
Mozambique has seen a rise in for-profit kidnappings targeting business executives. Such crimes are often premeditated and accompanied by signs that, when detected, can be crucial in preventing abductions. Kidnappers typically select multiple potential targets, assessing each for compatibility with their motives and likelihood of a successful and low-risk kidnapping.
Residents and travelers are advised to avoid becoming targets by practicing caution, avoiding deserted streets, and staying vigilant. If gunfire is heard, seek cover immediately.
