Sri Lanka: Advisory Regarding the General Election

○ A parliamentary election is scheduled for November 14, with campaign rallies and gatherings expected to be held nationwide.

○ As election activities intensify leading up to the event, and given the possibility of demonstrations, rallies, and protests due to the election results, it is advised to exercise heightened caution.

1. The parliamentary election in Sri Lanka is set to take place on Thursday, November 14.

Campaign activities have already commenced, and large gatherings are anticipated across the country.

•Voting Period: Thursday, November 14, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM

•Campaign Period: Monday, October 14 – Monday, November 11

2. Given the likelihood of increased election-related activity, demonstrations, and protests tied to election outcomes, Japanese residents and those planning to travel to Sri Lanka around the election campaign and voting period should take the following precautions to avoid unforeseen incidents:

•(1) Avoid areas where rallies or demonstrations are being held. If you encounter such activities, leave the area immediately.

•(2) Refrain from unnecessary commentary or actions, such as voicing support or criticism of specific candidates or discussing the election system.

•(3) Allow extra time for transportation, as roadblocks or restrictions may cause delays.

Although no major election-related violence has been reported during the recent presidential election in September or the ongoing parliamentary election campaign, violent incidents related to elections have occurred in the past. Additionally, during the September presidential election, a curfew was imposed from 10:00 PM on election day until noon the following day to ensure public safety. Please stay updated on the latest situation by monitoring local news.
