1. Incident Overview
At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 17, a Japanese male (company employee) was driving his SUV on the highway from Querétaro to León. While passing near the Apaseo el Grande industrial area (Highway 45D), he encountered two criminals attacking a vehicle in front of him. The vehicle ahead had stopped and was trying to escape in reverse. The Japanese man also attempted to back up, but he couldn’t as there was another vehicle behind him. As the two gunmen with rifles approached his car, he managed to drive between them and flee. During his escape, the criminals fired at the car, hitting the rear of the vehicle with four shots. Fortunately, the Japanese man was unharmed.
2. Important Notes
While security authorities are patrolling the area, similar incidents of vehicle robberies continue to occur frequently in this location. Please be extra cautious, especially when driving near state borders.
In this case, the victim was able to escape, but such actions can provoke the criminals, posing significant danger. We advise all Japanese residents to prioritize their safety in case of an incident.
• (1) Robberies can occur even during daylight hours. In recent times, vehicle robberies on Highway 45D, particularly between Salamanca City and the Querétaro state border, have been frequent. When traveling between states, carefully plan your route and consider the time of day.
• (2) Most vehicle robberies involve the use of firearms or blocking the road, often with violence. High speeds on highways make attempting to flee highly dangerous and could lead to serious accidents. If escaping seems difficult, follow the criminals’ instructions without resistance.
• (3) If you are robbed, do not resist and comply with the criminals’ demands. Avoid actions that could provoke them, such as staring at or chasing them. (Confronting or provoking the criminals increases the risk of harm. Generally, offering valuables without resistance lowers this risk, so stay calm and follow their instructions.)
