Location: Lebanon

Event: The U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon is currently tracking significant explosions the evening of September 27 in the Dahieh area of southern Beirut.

The Department of State urges U.S. citizens not to travel to Lebanon. We urge U.S. citizens to depart Lebanon while commercial options still remain available.

We recommend that U.S. citizens who choose not to depart prepare contingency plans for emergency situations and be prepared to shelter in place should the situation deteriorate further.

The U.S. Embassy strongly encourages U.S. citizens in Southern Lebanon, near the borders with Syria, and/or in refugee settlements to depart those areas immediately.

We recommend that U.S. citizens in Lebanon monitor Travel.State.Gov  for alerts and the news closely for breaking developments that could affect security.

We also recommend that U.S citizens enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)  to receive alerts and make it easier for us to locate you in an emergency.

Actions to take:

  • Avoid the area;
  • Avoid demonstrations and any large gatherings of people;
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Monitor local media for updates and avoid areas where violence, demonstrations, or disruptions are reported to be happening.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Avoid being outside after dark.
  • Stay alert in areas frequented by foreign visitors.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Have travel documents up-to-date and easily accessible.
