Ethiopia: Traffic Restrictions and Safety Measures in Addis Ababa from September 26 Onwards

In preparation for the holidays, the police presence will increase throughout the city along with checkpoints and vehicle searches.  Security checkpoints will be established on many roads and at major gathering points, especially at night.  

 

Beginning on September 26, expect: 

 

  • Road closures, heavy traffic, and pedestrian congestion at major intersections and around mosques and Orthodox churches.  
  • Anticipate that all roads leading to and around Meskel Square will be congested.  

 

The following list of routes are typically closed for this event: 

  • Meskel Square – Bambis – Urael Church 
  • Meskel Square – Filamingo – Getu Commercial – Wollo Sefer– Bole Road 
  • Meskel Square – Legehar – Mexico Square 
  • Meskel Square – Harambe Hotel – ENDF Ground Force HQ – Senga Tera 
  • Meskel Square – ECA – National Palace – Sheraton intersection 
  • Meskel Square – St. Joseph School – Meskel flower intersection (Debrezeit Road) 

 

Please keep personal security practices in mind: 

  •  Avoid large crowds and gatherings. 
  • If caught in a large crowd, attempt to disengage. 
  • Be aware of your surroundings.  
  • Keep a low profile and limit movements.  
  • Cooperate with security officials.
  • Monitor government announcements and local media. 
  • Please enroll or re-enroll in the new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)at step.state.gov to continue receiving alerts.  

 

If you plan any travel in Addis Ababa, the use of alternate routes is encouraged, and otherwise expect extended traffic delays.
