Health Alert:  Increased Dengue Risk in the Philippines

The Philippines has been added to the CDC Global Dengue Travel Health Notice due to a higher than usual number of dengue cases.  This means travelers to the country may face an increased risk of contracting dengue, a mosquito-borne illness.  

Background:

Countries are included in the Dengue Travel Health Notice (THN) when they are reporting higher than usual numbers of cases or when CDC identifies higher-than-expected numbers of dengue cases among US travelers returning to the United States from those countries. .  

CDC has identified a higher-than-expected number of dengue cases among US travelers returning from the Philippines, resulting in its addition to the Level 1 Travel Health Notice for Global Dengue. Actions to Take:

  • Use EPA-registered insect repellent.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors.
  • Sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms to avoid mosquito exposure.
