• On Sunday, September 15, a large-scale fire broke out in the municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha in the Aveiro region of central Portugal. The government has declared a “Situacao de Alerta” (Alert Situation) nationwide.
• As of the report on the 17th, there have been 3 confirmed deaths and 21 injuries. Over 500 firefighters are working to extinguish the fires. Consequently, traffic restrictions are in place on some sections of the main road (A1) connecting Lisbon and Porto, as well as on highways (A13) around the fire-affected areas.
• It is advised to avoid non-essential travel to the affected areas. If travel is necessary, make sure to stay informed through local news and reports, follow the authorities’ instructions if you detect any danger, and evacuate promptly to ensure your safety.
(Note: “Situacao de Alerta” is one of the three phases defined under the Basic Civil Protection Law (Lei de Bases da Protecao), with the others being “Crisis Situation” and “Disaster Civil Situation.” This phase involves the mobilization of firefighters, recommendations and warnings to residents, and restrictions on activities that could increase risk in the affected areas.)
