Brazil: Incidents of street bag snatching in São Paulo

  • Around 3:00 PM on Sunday, September 8th

2. Location of Incident

  • On the street near Praça de Liberdade Africa-Japão (Liberdade Africa-Japan Square) in the Liberdade District of São Paulo

3. Summary of the Incident

  • The victim was shopping in the aforementioned location when a thief, who approached on foot from an unknown direction, snatched the necklace the victim was wearing. The victim was not injured.
  • By the time the victim realized what had happened, the perpetrator had already fled more than 15 meters away. The suspect is described as a teenage boy, around 170 cm tall, with a brown complexion, a slim build, wearing a blue short-sleeve shirt and long pants.

4. Stolen Item

  • Necklace. No personal injuries.

  1. Thieves often take advantage of brief moments of inattention to target pedestrians’ belongings. It is important to stay vigilant at all times when going out and to demonstrate awareness by occasionally glancing around.
  2. Limit the amount of belongings you carry when going out, and avoid carrying valuables as much as possible. If you must carry valuables, distribute them in different places.
  3. It is safer to remove watches and accessories and place them in your bag until you reach your destination. Additionally, refrain from using smartphones outdoors.
  4. In the unfortunate event that you become involved in an incident, do not resist the perpetrator, as doing so may put your life in danger. Comply with the criminal’s demands, and avoid any sudden movements or actions that could be perceived as an attempt to escape or resist.
