Paraguay: Advisory on Air Pollution Caused by Forest Fires

In response to air pollution caused by forest fires in the Chaco region, the Paraguayan Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a warning for the elderly, pregnant women, young children, and individuals with heart, respiratory, or allergy-related conditions.

1. Eye Health Management
• People with pre-existing eye conditions should avoid smoke and minimize outdoor exposure to protect their eyes.
• Use protective goggles or sunglasses during firefighting activities.
• Avoid using contact lenses in areas with heavy smoke.
• If eyes become irritated, rinse with clean water.
• Do not rub your eyes, as this may worsen the symptoms.
• If discomfort persists, avoid self-diagnosis and consult a healthcare professional.
2. For Those with Allergies or Respiratory Conditions
• Stay indoors and wear a mask when going outside.
• Keep necessary medications, such as inhalers, readily available.
• Avoid strenuous physical activities.
• Keep windows and doors closed, and maintain clean air conditioner filters.
3. For Individuals with Heart Conditions
• Regularly monitor your blood pressure and blood sugar, and consult a doctor if any symptoms arise.
• Follow prescribed medication strictly, and seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual symptoms.
4. For Infants, the Elderly, and Pregnant Women
• Limit exposure to outdoor air and ensure adequate hydration.
• If symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or fatigue occur, seek immediate medical advice.
