2. To Avoid Becoming a Crime Victim
(1) Theft (pickpocketing and snatching) and robbery are prevalent in Addis Ababa, occurring both day and night. Foreigners, like locals, can be targeted at any time. Always be aware that you could be a target while walking. Especially avoid walking early in the morning or late at night.
(2) Pickpocketing and snatching often involve attracting attention by grabbing your arm, splashing water or spitting, or pretending to sell something. If it’s obvious you are carrying a mobile phone and it is not secured, you are at risk. Attach chains or straps to valuables like wallets and mobile phones, and secure them to your clothing or body.
(3) Always stay alert to your surroundings. If you notice suspicious individuals approaching or feel something is wrong, leave the area immediately and seek help from nearby police officers or people using clear and understandable language.
(4) If threatened with firearms or knives, prioritize your safety and comply without resistance.
