Recently, a protest was held in front of Japanese government offices in Geneva, calling for the release of Paul Watson, former Sea Shepherd representative, who is currently detained in Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory.
There is a possibility that protests against Japan may expand further. Stay informed with the latest news and advisories, and if you encounter a demonstration or gathering, promptly leave the area and ensure your safety.
On July 21, 2024, the police in Greenland, acting on an international arrest warrant issued by Interpol at Japan’s request, announced the detention of Paul Watson, former Sea Shepherd representative, who had arrived by ship in Greenland.
In response to this situation, a demonstration demanding Paul Watson’s release took place on the evening of August 6, 2024, at Nation Square in Geneva (in front of the UN headquarters). Similar protests have also occurred in front of Japanese government offices in Geneva.
There is a potential for further protests against Japan, so it is important to stay updated with news and security advisories. If you come across a demonstration or gathering, promptly leave the area and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety.
If you come across any information regarding harm to Japanese nationals, please contact the Consulate (office).
